Strange Happenings Weird, Wild Stuff!
The Dead Zone: 1983 / R / 103 Min. The always interesting Christopher Walken plays a man who has psychic powers that he uses to solve murders, and perhaps save the world. There's some good paranormal-paranoia in this one. Not too scary, just a good eerie thriller.
Firestarter: 1984 / R / 115 Min. Supernatural chiller about a little girl who can cause objects to spontaneously combust, which I really hated upon my first viewing. If you can get past the fact that the little girl is Drew Barrymore, fresh from her role in E.T., then this is actually a pretty good film!
Flatliners: 1990 / R / 111 Min. Kiefer Sutherland is a medical student who decides to find out what's on the other side. He has his friends kill him, then bring him back to tell them what he's found. After his friends also try it, the morbid experiment, of course, goes horribly, horribly wrong. Also stars Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt. The Frighteners: 1996 / R / 109 Min. This is a fun, often overlooked little flick starring Michael J. Fox. Fox plays a guy who, after a near-death experience, decides to open a scam Ghostbuster-like business. The mix of comedy and horror is a bit uneven at times, but there's enough of each to entertain on both levels. The House on Haunted Hill: 1958 / NR / 75 Min. Vincent Price is at his best in this great B-movie about a millionaire who owns a very creepy house. He offers a group of people a fortune to survive one night in it. The 1999 remake of this is also pretty good and is slightly less cheesy, but why watch Geoffrey Rush doing a Vincent Price impersonation when you can get the real thing? The Legend of Hell House: 1973 / PG / 95 Min. One night in a haunted house not scary enough for you? Try a week! Roddy McDowell stars in this film about a group of researchers who investigate the strange deaths that take place in a cursed home. Pet Sematary: 1989 / R / 102 Min. Another Stephen King story gets the Hollywood treatment. Though not as wickedly humorous as the book, this movie version is a very faithful telling of King's demented tale of the re-animation of cats and kids. The Puppet Master: 1989 / R / 90 Min. A puppet maker uses ancient Egyptian powers to give life to his creations. A group of psychics then try to find the possessed puppets in an attempt to harness their magic. This direct-to-video series has spawned six sequels, so you already know that those psychics weren't very successful! Also features some REALLY bad acting. (Keanu-bad!) Re-Animator: 1985 / R / 86 Min. When will these medical-types figure out that you can't just bring back the dead without something really bad happening? Hopefully never, since then we wouldn't get any more great gore-fests like this one!!! Manages to be stylish and disgusting at the same time, a neat trick for any movie! Scanners: 1981 / R / 102 Min. People with E.S.P. wage a war against those who misunderstand and fear them in this David Cronenberg directed shocker. Where the heck was Professor X while all this was going on? |
